Vitamin C is a well-studied antioxidant that brightens skin tone, supports collagen production, and helps defend against environmental damage — but its form matters enormously, since L-ascorbic acid (the most researched and effective form) is also the least stable and most likely to cause irritation in sensitive skin. ●      Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) — a gentler, more stable derivative, better suited to sensitive or acne-prone skin, though generally less potent than L-ascorbic acid.

●      Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) — another stable, gentle derivative, well tolerated but with more limited penetration.

●      Ascorbyl glucoside — converts to active vitamin C once absorbed, offering a stable, lower-irritation option.

●      Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate — an oil-soluble form with strong stability and good tolerability, increasingly used in intelligent formulations that pair potency with comfort.

How to Tell If Your Vitamin C Has Oxidized

Vitamin C serums typically start clear, pale yellow, or light in color. If a serum has turned a deep amber, orange, or brown color, it has oxidized and lost most of its efficacy — and in some cases, oxidized vitamin C can actually generate free radicals rather than neutralize them. Proper packaging (opaque, airless pump bottles) significantly slows this process.

How to Use Vitamin C in a Routine

Vitamin C is most commonly used in the morning, layered after cleansing and before moisturizer and SPF, to maximize its antioxidant defense against daytime environmental exposure. For L-ascorbic acid, 10–20% is the evidence-backed effective range; going higher doesn't reliably improve results and increases irritation risk. Derivative forms are typically formulated at higher percentages since they're inherently gentler.

Can vitamin C be used with retinol?

Yes, though many people prefer using vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night to reduce the chance of irritation and keep both actives performing at their best.

Why did my vitamin C serum turn orange?

This indicates oxidation from light, air, or heat exposure — the product has degraded and will be significantly less effective. Store vitamin C in a cool, dark place and replace it if the color changes noticeably.
