Antioxidants protect skin by neutralizing free radicals — unstable molecules generated by UV exposure, pollution, and normal metabolism that damage collagen, DNA, and cell membranes — and the skin has its own built-in antioxidant defense system that becomes depleted under everyday environmental stress, which is exactly what topical antioxidants are designed to reinforce. Not every ingredient labeled "antioxidant-rich" has meaningful evidence behind it, though — the strength of the science varies enormously by ingredient.
What Free Radicals Actually Do to Skin
Free radicals are generated continuously by UV exposure, pollution, and even normal cellular metabolism. Left unchecked, they trigger oxidative stress — a cascade that degrades collagen, damages cell membranes, and accelerates the visible signs of aging: fine lines, dullness, and uneven tone. Why Antioxidants and SPF Are a Package Deal, Not Alternatives
Antioxidants and sunscreen work through different, complementary mechanisms: SPF blocks or reflects UV radiation before it hits skin; antioxidants neutralize the free radicals that get generated anyway, including from the pollution and visible light that SPF doesn't fully address. Using antioxidants as a substitute for SPF — a genuinely common misconception — leaves skin exposed to the UV damage that antioxidants alone can't prevent.
How to Actually Use Antioxidants in a Routine
Layer an antioxidant serum (vitamin C is the most evidence-backed starting point) in the morning, underneath moisturizer and SPF, so it's active during the hours skin faces the most environmental stress. Antioxidants don't need to be reapplied throughout the day the way SPF does, since their job is cellular-level defense rather than a physical UV barrier.
